The Movements and Habits of Climbing Plants.
London: John Murray, 1875. "Second edition, revised". 8vo. viii, 208 pp. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered black title label to one panel, lettered direct to another and gilt decoration to others, endpapers and all edges marbled, armorial bookplate of a Thomas William Evans to the front pastedown. 13 woodcuts in the text. Some wear to the leather and boards though the binding remains sound, otherwise very good. Sir Thomas William Evans (1820-92) of Allestree Hall was the Liberal MP for the local South Derbyshire constituency and was also the first chairman of Derbyshire County Council. Freeman, 836. First published in the Journal of the Proceedings of the Linnean Society and then as two offprints, this edition is often described as the "first edition in book form". Considerably expanded from its predecessors, it was the first to appear in hard covers and the first to bear Murray's imprint. Freeman estimates the print run to have been 1,500 - "the smallest issue of any Murray Darwin" Item #51956
