(xvi, 624 pp. 19th century black half calf over marbled boards, spine with gilt tooled raised bands, gilt lettered direct to one panel, early bookplate of a Josiah Newman ("Aux Fideles Fidele") to the front pastedown, all edges marbled. Portrait frontispiece (engraved by Finden after Maclise) and 39 plates. Foxing to the plates, the frontispiece and final plate the more so, mild rubbing to the extremities, else very good. Smith, I, 5. Agreeing with all but three of the issue points listed by Smith; the frontispiece and the first two of the initial four plates contain the Chapman and Hall imprint - those without imprints "may, therefore, be termed 'second states'" Item #51646
