Scapa and a Camera. Pictorial Impressions of Five Years Spent at the Grand Fleet Base. With an Introduction by Vice-Admiral F.S. Miller...
London: Published at the Offices of Country Life, Ltd., 1921. First edition. 4to. xx, 144 pp. Publisher's khaki boards, black lettered to the spine and upper cover, dust jacket with black and white photographic illustration mounted to the front panel, signed by Burrows on the title page, supplied with an original wooden box from the photographic dealer J. Lizars of Edinburgh containing 74 lantern slides of scenes around Scapa Flow. Numerous photographic illustrations falling into four categories: scenes of the naval base and topographic scenes around Scapa plus images of the British and German fleets - the latter often seen in distress. A little discolouration to the boards, some edge wear to the jacket - mostly along the upper edge, the wooden case paint speckled and worn but sound, a leather strap only partially present, the slides mostly in good condition - some of the paper edging worn or loosening, a small handful cracked but holding. A unique collection, gifted to the father of the previous owner by Burrows' sister many years ago, making it quite possible that the slides were the author's own. Of the slide images, 22 are definitely reproduced in the book. Some others show scenes reminiscent of those within, though being uncaptioned of images of warships they are harder to identify. Roughly half do not appear in print here at all though they mostly cover similar themes and subjects. The price includes VAT in the UK. Please contact us if you are elsewhere. Item #51214
