London: Edward Stanford, 1902. Third edition. Map dimensions 62 x 57 cm, overall 67 x 62 cm. Folding geologically coloured map showing the extents from Watford down to Epsom and Barking across to Southall, dissected into 20 sections and mounted on linen, folds between original blindstamped green cloth covers, gilt lettered to the upper board, the publisher's yellow printed advertisements to the inner cover and the folded end section. Very good. A later edition of this important geological map of the metropolis, first published in 1870 and preceded only by Richard William Mylne's "Map of the Geology and Contours of London and its Environs" (1856). Jordan drew on Mylne's work and also the fieldwork of the Geological Survey of England and Wales - principally that of the geological surveyor William Whitaker, whose name appears on the second edition dated 1882 and all subsequent issues. Hyde, no. 136, (6). Item #37549
