First British edition. 8vo. xii, (ii), 344, 35, (1) pp. Early beaded cloth, gilt lettered spine label, contemporary owner's initials to the head of the title page. 30 fine handcoloured plates. Some fading and wear to the spine, small split to the head of the lower joint though it is firm, a mostly marginal stain to 12 plates, the rear free endpaper and the pastedown at the fore edge, otherwise a very good unsophisticated copy. The first British edition of this important work - the first US edition of the previous year having been the first work of botany both written by an American and published in America. Neither edition is common in commerce. Item #37442
