Publisher's maroon half morocco over marbled paper boards, gilt lettered direct to the spines, original "Subscriber's copy" price label (£4, 4s) to the front pastedown, beneath this the early ownership inscription of what appears to be "J. Wade Butler" with the contemporary inscription of Rhoda Jane Butler to the opposing front free endpaper (the name Mrs. Richard W. Butler of Rye appears in the subscriber's list to the rear of volume II), the later illustrated bookplate of Peter and Jane Whiteley also appears on both front pastedowns. 2 folding maps, 56 copperplate engravings and 80 wood engravings in the text Neat repair to the spine head of volume I, cracks to the lower extremities of both joints of volume II though they are holding, some foxing to the both frontispieces and title pages, the contents otherwise clean, very good overall. One of the standard works on the county, covering each hundred and parish and listing the various ancient manor houses, churches and ruins as well as biographies of important figures. Item #35037
