Item #34504 The Maze Maker. Michael AYRTON.
The Maze Maker.

The Maze Maker.

New York: Bantam Books, (1969). Paperback edition, small 8vo. (x), 277, (1) pp. Limited edition, no. 30 of 50 copies with a custom made cover, signed and pasted on by Ayrton. Handwritten postcard from Ayrton also loosely inserted. Some mild bumping to the top of the upper wrapper, otherwise fine. Disapproving of the original artwork Ayrton made his own. The text to the lower cover reads, in part, "The author of this book, finding the jacket imposed upon it by the publisher of this edition unacceptable in that it represents a Balinese lady reclining on a stuffed moose, has here replaced it with a drawing of his own in which the Maze Maker holds the totem of the publisher symbolically..." - a bantam being strangled at the bottom of the image. Another copy of the book in its original state is included. From the library of George Astley, secretary of the Society of Authors; the postcard also being addressed to him, concerning a future engagement in Ayrton's typically chatty style. "First with the news, you are indeed! I have a feeling Madame Druon will exercise that recognition of necessity which has for centuries bred discretion in the French and all may be well..."
