First edition. 8vo. xii, 242 pp. Publisher's green cloth, gilt lettered to the spine, the author's signature in gilt Greek script to the upper board, dust jacket, not price clipped. 26 black and white photographic illustrations plus a double page sketch map of the island. Tanning to the white rear panel of the jacket, occasional light edge with a few subtle tissue repairs on the verso, very good overall. The wartime memoir of this Greek resistance fighter. Serving during the German occupation of Crete, Psychoundakis came into contact with the British SOE officer Patrick Leigh Fermor, for whom he ran messages across the island. After the war Psychoundakis was mistakenly imprisoned as a deserter, on discovering this Fermor assisted with his release and, later on, assisted with the publication of this work. Item #42036
