The Arab. The Horse of the Future. Preface by Sir Walter Gilbey.

London: Gay and Bird, 1905. First edition. 8vo. xx, 249, (3) pp. Publisher's green cloth, gilt lettered to the spine, inscribed on the title page "G. Walden from [Lady] Wentworth", with another inscription to the front free endpaper "Eml Hutchins at [?] 26/6/10" plus a manuscript list to the recto of the rear endpaper headed "Arab Horses, 1830, Emanuel Hutchins", followed by a list of six Arabs owned by Hutchins. Frontispiece and 7 black and white photographic plates plus a further illustration in the text. Light rubbing to the extremities, contents perhaps a little shaken but holding firm, the fore edge of the frontispiece slightly ragged, very good overall though. The inscriptions to the endpapers relate to Emanuel Hutchins and one of his descendants. Hutchins was an Irish horse breeder, owning a large stud at Cregane Castle, who died in 1839 while on a trip to the Middle East to procure horses. The presentation inscription to the title page is from Lady Wentworth, the famous Arab horse breeder and owner of the prestigious Crabbet Park Stud in Sussex. The inscription to the rear regarding the six Arabs from Hutchins 1830 stock is possibly also in Wentworth's hand. Item #40503
