Etymologicum Anglicanum. Ex Autographo descripsit & accessionibus permultis auctum editit Edwardus Lye... Præmittuntur Vita Auctoris et Grammatica Anglo-Saxonica.

Oxonii [Oxford]: E. Theatro Sheldoniano, 1743. First edition, folio, (xl, 532) pp. Portrait frontispiece plus an engraved coat of arms above the dedication. Contemporary speckled calf, corners worn, spine with some wear also, and loss to the ends but with professional restoration to the joints, fairly recent spine label, overall a good sound copy. Born in Germany, Junius was brought up in the Netherlands, where he was briefly a pastor before resigning on theological grounds. Travelling to England he was employed by the Earl of Arundel as a tutor and later librarian. He died in Oxford in 1677, and his collection of manuscripts was left to the Bodleian Library, from which this work was later published. An important early etymological work which was one of Samuel Johnson's main sources for his dictionary in the following decade. Item #38385
