London: Printed by Jo. Marten, and Ja. Allestry, Printers to the Royal Society... 1664. First edition. 4to. (16), 120; (4), 20, (2), 21-40, (2), 41-50, (2), 55-83, (3) pp. Later, probably 18th century, calf, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered label, gilt decoration to the panels, gilt rules and devices to the boards, the armorial bookplate of a John Warren ("Tenebo") to the front pastedown with an old bookseller's printed description tipped in adjacent, all edges yellow. Subtle repairs to the joints and spine ends, an attractive copy. A hugely influential work on forestry, the first iteration of which appeared as a paper delivered to the Royal Society in 1662. Prompted by the depletion of the nation's timber reserves caused by increasing domestic and industrial use and the growing need to rebuild the Royal Navy, fellows were invited to submit papers to the Society in order to direct the propagation of new forests. Evelyn was tasked with collating the papers of three fellows, Jonathan Gadded, Christopher Merit and John Winthrop, and adding his own thoughts; this report forms the basis of the work with his "Pomona" and "Kalendarium" appended. Henry, I, 132 and pp. 101-105 for a general history of the work. Item #38266
