Privately printed for the author at Kilatmadju Press, Djalan.. Bandung, Indonesia, 1963. Limited edition of an unspecified number. Small 4to. xxiv, 502 pp. Publisher's blue cloth backed board, the upper cover lettered in blue and black, British diplomatic private ownership stamp to the front free endpaper, with beneath this a long and warm presentation inscription from the author to then British ambassador to Rangoon Sir Nicolas Fenn - "with best compliments from the Author to his Excellency... a rare friend who had been to the Chin Hills a part of which never fell to the Japanese invaders..." Signed by Hau in English and Burmese script and dated by him October 1983, with loosely inserted a large pamphlet gilt embossed on one side with the crest of Charles University, Prague, printed for the occasion of Vum Ko Hau being awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Black and white photographic illustrations. Slight surface loss to the upper cover, slight tanning to the edges of both boards, else very good. Vum Ko Hau served in the Burmese army during the Second World War before embarking on a long and illustrious career in international diplomacy including ambassadorships to three countries. Sir Nicholas Fenn was a long-standing British diplomat with numerous postings early in his career including China and Burma. He returned to Burma in the 1980s as British ambassador and was fluent in the language. Item #38196
