Engraved second title, frontispiece and 41 plates, the plates in their early states without captions and with Phiz's replacements for the two suppressed Buss plates, a few spots to the frontispiece and second title only. Handsomely bound in the Cosway style by Sangorski and Sutcliffe for the bookseller Charles J. Sawyer in dark green crushed morocco, a.e.g., red calf only with Dickens' initials to the upper cover, gilt spine and ruled borders. Red silk moiré free endpapers, with Dickens' signature in gilt to the front, red morocco doublures with gilt dentelles, with an oval portrait of Dickens after Maclise set inside the front cover. A beautifully bound example, held in a custom made velvet-lined green cloth box. Smith I 3. Item #38038
