Geological Map of the British Isles.

Edinburgh: W. & A.K. Johnston; London: Edward Stanford, Groombridge & Sons, William Allan & Co., 1864. Two parts, map dimensions c. 62 x 106 cm, i.e. c. 124 x 106 cm if conjoined. A fine colour printed geological map with a colour inset map of the Shetland Islands to the upper left corner along with two colour cross sections, numerous black and white illustrations to the sides and lower left corner, an old ink stamp of the French Navy's "Dépôt des Cartes et Plans de la Marine" adjacent to the title and on one of the folded end sections, the latter also featuring a modern deaccession stamp "Service Historique de la Defense Sorti des collections". Not sectionalised or mounted on linen, it folds between early blue cloth backed covers with marbled boards, the name of the French naval institute in gilt to the upper cover and the brief title in gilt to the spine. A small tear without loss to one fold of the map, now with a subtle tissue repair on the verso, very good condition considering the size of the map and the fragility of the paper. The first edition of this uncommon and visually striking map of the whole of the British Isles, many of the earlier geological maps of the country just focusing on England and Wales. Item #37564
