London: Published by John Weale, [c.1834-39]. Map dimensions 64 x 52.5 cm, overall 66 x 54.5 cm. Folding geologically hand coloured map with further tables illustrating rock formations and cross sections hand coloured to the left and lower edges, a long table illustrating British strata along the right edge also coloured, dissected into 20 sections and mounted on linen, original green cloth front board with the publisher's title label, the spine and lower board sympathetically restored. Very good overall. Phillips was Professor of Geology at King's College from 1834 until 1839. A footnote to the map refers to the "Authorities consulted" and states that the colouring of the Silurian system on this map must only be considered "provisional" until the publishing of "Mr Murchison's" work. Roderick Impey Murchison's "The Silurian System" with its large folding map was published in 1839. Item #37563
