Leyden: A.W. Sijthoff and Brussels: Édicions de la Connaissance [later] La Conaissance, 1967-76. First edition thus. Fourteen volumes bound in sixteen plus the "Supplements" part. 4to. Publisher's blue cloth, gilt lettered to the spines and upper boards, dust jackets, "Supplements" in plain white printed wrappers, stapled as issued. Profusely illustrated in black and white throughout. Some scuffing and occasional light edge wear to the jackets though they remain sound, a very good set overall. First published in German between 1924 and 1937 in Berlin and Leyden, this new edition "brought up-to-date in some respects and augmented with about two-thousand new illustrations". A monumental reference work for this key stage in the development of European art. Item #36383
