The Rivers, Mountains and Sea-Coast of Yorkshire. With Essays on the Climate, Scenery, and Ancient Inhabitants of the County.

London: John Murray, 1855. Second edition. 8vo. (iii)-xvi, 316, 20 pp., bound without the half title. Recent blue papered boards, printed spine label, inscribed by the Phillips on the title page "To Rev. Wm. Hone from his parishioner The Author". 35 black and white plates plus a colour geological map of the county. A little spotting to the front leaves and the plates, very good overall. John Phillips (1800-1874) was the nephew of famous geological mapmaker William Smith. He spent the early part of his career in Yorkshire and published his study on the geology of the county, "Illustrations of the Geology of Yorkshire" in two volumes appearing in 1829 and 1836. He won the Wollaston medal in 1845 and eventually succeeded to the position of reader of Geology at Oxford in 1856. The map present here is clearly based on Phillips' own large folding geological map of Yorkshire first published in 1853, the same year as the first edition of this work. Item #36236
