The Works of... Poetic, Symbolic, and Critical. Edited with lithographs of the illustrated "Prophetic Books," and a memoir and interpretation by Edwin John Ellis and William Butler Yeats.

London: Bernard Quaritch, 1893. First edition thus, 3 volumes, large 8vo. Portrait frontispieces in each volume plus 2 folding charts and 279 reproductions of lithographs and engravings in volume III. Handsomely bound by Bumpus in contemporary crushed morocco, t.e.g., marbled sides, spines slightly sunned with a mild scuff near the top of the spine of volume III, but overall a handsome set. An important and early collection. Yeats wrote in his own copy "The writing of this book is mainly Ellis's, the thinking is as much mine as his... The greater part of the 'symbolic system' is my writing; the rest of the book was written by Ellis working over short accounts of the books by me'." DNB notes "While often erratic and idiosyncratic, it helped establish the importance of Blake's esoteric verse..." Bentley 369. Wade 218. One of 500 sets from a total edition of 650. Item #36046
