[Southampton]:, 1856. Map dimensions 59 x 90 cm, overall 67 x 97 cm. Folding map with original hand colouring showing the geological strata and a key to the lower left corner, scale one inch to the mile. Dissected into 16 sections and mounted on linen. Some damp staining to the reverse, not affecting the map, edges of several sections lifting slightly but sound, old pencil annotations extending the strata into the sea. Green cloth end sections also marked. Based on sheet 10 of the Ordnance Survey, the geological information was provided by the Geological Survey under the direction of Sir Roderick Impey Murchison. The local surveyors are also named: Henry W. Bristow ("geological lines, Cretacious and Tertiary") and W. Talbot Aveline (the "Cretacious series between Whale and Shanklin"); Andrew Crombie Ramsey is named as the local director. Item #35717
