Small losses to the spine ends and corners of the jacket plus a large section to the foot of the upper panel, "30" written in ink towards the head of the same, some neat tissue repairs on the verso, the book generally very good. Ellen Thorbecke, née Kolban (1902-73), was a German reporter and photographer. Her Dutch husband was made ambassador to China in 1931, a position he held for four years. During their stay Thorbecke produced two books, "Peking Studies" published in Shanghai by Kelly and Walsh in 1934 and, a year later, this book. She published several other works on China in the succeeding decades. Item #34466
