Paintings by Michael Ayrton. (Introduction by James Laver).

London: The Grey Walls Press, 1948. First edition, small 4to, 17, (3) pp, followed by 40 black and white illustrations. Signed by Ayrton on the fly leaf, dated September 1948, and with two good quality photographic reproductions of his work (a portrait of Norman Douglas and a painting entitled "The Sleeper in Flight") loosely inserted. Also loosely inserted is an eight page autograph letter addressed to John Arlott (although one page is blank except for Ayrton's note "I don't know why this page is left blank"). Cloth, d.w., some wear to extremities, minor loss to spine ends. The letter, dated September 1945 and sent from a hotel in Pembrokeshire, is a remarkable record of Ayrton's own opinions of his career and influences. Flatmates during this period, he would illustrate Arlott's collection of poetry, "Clausentum," the following year. Written in order to help Arlott write an article for The Windmill magazine (though this seems never to have appeared), it starts with directions to various files and folders in Ayrton's studio containing drawings, articles and press cuttings. He then goes on to list his exhibitions, stage designs and illustration work as well as the private collections holding his work before writing more generally about his influences and style. "...1st and foremost & forever my roots lie in the Gothic Tradition of Flanders and early England... Blake of course and Palmer... and of course Picasso... I started to paint at the age of ten with the certainty that it would be my profession... In politics I am of course socialist but this is no concern of my painting... I am perhaps too interested in the whole course and future of painting in general and try to play too big a part in it for my own good. I am a damn good critic..." Item #34465
