The Elf. A Magazine of Drawings and Writings by... [New Series]... [with a separate issue of number one].

Harting, Petersfield: Printed and published at the Pear Tree Press, 1905[-1912]. Two volumes. 4to. (iv), 82 pp. Collection: original boards, printed to the upper cover, recent cloth spine to style with black lettering. Individual issue: limited edition, no. 29 of 100 copies. (vi), 10 pp. Original wrappers, printed to the upper cover. Bound volume with a frontispiece, illustrated title page, 18 full page plates, 5 tipped in plates including an original photo of the actual press plus 14 illustrations in the text (varying sizes up to full page); wrappered issue repeating the frontispiece, illustrated title, one of the full page and one of the tipped in plates plus several illustrations and vignettes in the text. A hint of dampstaining to the lower extremities of the boards plus a little to the lower margin of the frontispiece and title page, a lovely collection in all other regards. James Guthrie published four numbers of a series with the same title under his Pear Tree Press imprint from Autumn 1899 to Summer 1900. Another series was published by the Old Bourne Press in four irregular seasonal parts, each limited to 250 copies, between May 1902 and February 1904. This "New Series", reverting back to the Pear Tree imprint, began in 1905 and was to have been issued quarterly as per the duplicate individual issue supplied here. However, as with much of the ad hoc nature of the press, only six continuously paginated parts with limitations of either 80 or 100 copies had appeared by 1912, with complete bound copies, such as this, being sold by the publisher priced at one guinea. The earlier collections are mentioned by Ridler and Tomkinson, though not this "New Series" which is understandably less common than that published by the Old Bourne Press. Item #33302
