London: James Wyld, [1850s]. Large folding map of southern England extending from Bristol across to just beyond Chatham and just north of Banbury down to the Isle of Wight, presented in two halves (each 149 x 95 cm, i.e. 149 x 190 cm if joined) made up from nine conjoined sheets, bright full original colour demarcating the counties, each half dissected into 56 sections and mounted on linen, original brown ribbed cloth slipcase with a Wyld printed label to the upper cover, brown cloth to the folded end sections. Neat repairs to the case which is slightly faded in places, the maps in excellent condition. The map covers most or all of the following counties: Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex, plus substantial parts of Essex, Kent, Bedfordshire, Somerset and Dorset. The Berks and Hants branch line of the Great Western Railway is shown as terminating at Hungerford, the line was opened thus far in 1847 and was extended in 1862. Cruchley's imprint appears several times along the lower margin of the map though in each instance it has largely been obscured by labels featuring Wyld's imprint. These labels mention the exhibition of Wyld's Great Globe in Leicester Square which ran from 1851 to 1862. Item #33248
