Testament of Youth. An Autobiographical Study of the Years 1900-1925.

London: Victor Gollancz, 1933. Sixth impression, 8vo, 661, (3) pp. Signed by the author on the title page. Later inscription concerning the owner's war record ("B.E.F. and I.E.F. 1917-1918") to paste down. Original cloth, spine dull, slight wear to ends. The first instalment of the author's memoirs, covering her later childhood, experiences as a woman and a nurse in the First World War and growing disillusionment on her return to Britain. Brittain felt compelled to write about the war and her "depleted generation" having lost both her brother Edward and his friend (and her first love) Roland Leighton, dedicating the book to their memory. In writing as true a personal account as she could using her diaries and old letters, she felt she could "put the life of an ordinary individual into its niche in contemporary history" Item #33097
