London: Ward, Lock, & Tyler, [1870s]. Four volumes, small 8vo. Marbled endpapers, signature of Lily Noble to the title page of "Little Women". Contemporary full vellum, red morocco spine labels, each volume with matching hand painted decoration - lilies of the valley to the upper covers, a smaller bouquet to the spines under the words "Lily Series", and the initials "L.J.N." to the lower covers. Some light soiling, spines slightly browned, the painting to the upper cover of "I've Been Thinking" slightly lighter, possibly as a result of some old cleaning, otherwise an unusual set of unique bindings. The Lily Series was a collection of fiction which appeared in the latter part of the 19th century, four of which appear here bound in bespoke vellum for a girl with the same name. It is possible that Lily Noble was the daughter of John Noble, one of the partners in the paint and varnish firm Noble and Hoare. Both men commissioned John Everett Millais to paint their daughters, with the portrait of Lily Noble as a young girl dating from 1864. Item #32845
