Item #31655 An Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth, in opposition to Sophistry and Scepticism. James BEATTIE.

An Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth, in opposition to Sophistry and Scepticism.

Edinburgh: Printed for A. Kincaid & J. Bell; And for E. & C. Dilly, London, 1771. Second edition, "corrected and enlarged". 8vo. (viii), 568 pp. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine flat with gilt rules, gilt lettered red label, discreet old bookseller's ticket of W. Cornish and Co. of Birmingham to the rear pastedown. Spine and joints sometime neatly repaired with some darkening to the leather, a crack to the upper joint visible on opening though, having had some restoration, it feels sound. Better known for his poetry, such as "The Minstrel", this was a popular if rather amateur attack on Hume's writings. Item #31655
