Item #29378 Brighthelmston. . YEAKELL, GARDNER, T, W.

Brighthelmston.

Brighton: Arthur Wallis, [c.1830]. Overall 33.4 x 30.3 cm, incorporating the plan of Brighton at 25.6 x 30.3 cm and the prospect of the town from the sea at 7.7 cm x 30.3 cm. Original lithograph after the original copper engraved plan, later hand colouring to both the map and the view, the upper edge of the plan with a decorative cartouche featuring a lettered key to principal places located beneath. Sometime laid down on card, a few small tears without loss, some small surface losses to the upper right corner. Ford, 3, i, describing the view. First published in 1779 from an original survey by these early pioneers in the mapping of Sussex, presumably as an adjunct to their two inch to the mile county map. This printing of the map no doubt appeared as a result of the increased number of visitors to the newly fashionable resort. Neither edition of this very early broadsheet plan of Brighton is common.
