Publisher's black buckram, gilt lettered red spine label, the publisher's initials in gilt to both boards, top edge red, dust jacket. Colour frontispiece and three illustrations to the head of the chapters by John Craxton. Some spotting to the jacket plus a small tear to the upper edge of the upper panel, some very minor wear at the spine ends and corners, else very good. Three "meditations" on monastic life: "The Abbey at St. Wandrille de Fontanelle", "From Solesmes to La Grande Trappe" and "The Rock Monasteries of Cappadocia". The first appearance of this work, the author's second book, and uncommon with the dust jacket. The trade edition, issued by John Murray, was not published until 1957. Item #29221
