London: Printed for Henry Washbourne & William Tegg, 1850. 8vo, xxxii, 722 pp. 8 portrait plates, the frontispiece foxed with small tears to the tissue, armorial bookplate, inscription to front blank. Contemporary gilt decorated morocco, a.e.g., light sunning of spine, top of the lower cover with some mild wear. First published between March 1711 and December 1712, with the eighth volume containing the continuation of the last 80 issues, published between June and December 1714. Addison and Steele shared the bulk of the writing between them - the essays are a wide ranging and apolitical view of the times which proved enormously popular, and subsequently influential upon later periodicals.
