Label removed from the paste down, brief ink scribblings to the same and to the fly leaf. Original gilt titled blue cloth, spine stained and slightly wrinkled, some wear to the top of the lower joint, gilt arms of the Knox Institute, Haddington, to upper cover. Initially employed as a mining engineer in Egypt, Petherick also traded in gum arabic and was appointed British Vice-Consul in Khartoum in 1858. He is best known for the controversy surrounding Speke and Grant's arrival following their expedition to discover the source of the Nile. Despite being only a short distance away, and Speke and Grant's extremely late arrival, he was blamed for being absent and his reputation suffered accordingly. Item #23028
