First edition, 4to, (iii)-xii, (5)-165, (1), 8 advertisement pp, bound without the half title. 30 folding plates, mostly showing ship manoeuvres, with some light browning and several pencilled annotations, edge of one plate soiled. Contemporary half calf, spine neatly restored retaining the original backstrip. "...one of the first British accounts of tactics, as opposed to a work in French translation" (DNB). ESTC calls for a leaf of advertisements following the preliminaries, but does not mention the 8 pages of advertisements at the end. Parts II, III and IV were published in 1797. Item #20262
