London: Mathew Lownes, 1606. First edition in English, folio, (viii), 272, 39, (25) pp, with the Index and Errata leaf bound at the back. Engraved title page laid down with loss to the top just affecting the image, part of a motto in an old hand to the top of the leaf, Extra Illustrated with 12 portraits of the Caesars, taken from the Encyclopædia Londinensis (published 1826) and engraved after Titian. One leaf with loss to the margin, laid down, just affecting the side-notes, another leaf with a small marginal closed tear, some mostly light damp staining. Modern black full calf, green spine label. An influential work of biography composed early in the second century AD. As secretary to the Emperor Hadrian Suetonius would have had access to the Imperial archives and uniquely included much anecdotal material. "...he throws considerable light on an important period, and next to Tacitus and Dio Cassius is the chief (sometimes the only) authority" (Encyc. Britannica). STC 23424. Item #19902
