Bacon's Pictorial View of the World. [with] Hand-book of the Pictorial World [cover title].

London: G.W. Bacon, [c.1880]. Overall dimensions 99 x 74.5 cm incorporating a central panel featuring a double hemisphere map of the world (39 x 60 cm). An impressive chromolithographed map of the world, surrounded by illustrations of national flags, coins, costumes, facial types along with charts of time differences, rivers lengths and mountain heights amongst others, backed onto linen though not dissected and folding between russet cloth covers. Handbook: iv, (iv), 75, 5 pp. Publisher's blindstamped purple cloth, later ownership inscription to the front fre endpaper. Not being dissected, the map paper is slightly fragile at the folds but is sound overall, the map covers with some wear, the book covers faded to the spine. Scarce. OCLC only records the two copies of the map, in the British Library with a date of 1868, and two copies of the handbook, in the National Library of New Zealand and Cambridge. This copy differs from the only other copy we have been able to trace, in that our example features illustrations of the explorers Columbus, Cook, Raleigh and Livingstone rather than illustrations of racial types.
