London: John Murray... and W.B. Cooke, 1819. Sole edition, part I - all published. Folio. (24), 20 pp. Publisher's wrappers, printed to the upper cover, subtly rebacked with a close matching paper, Murray's name neatly struck out by a contemporary hand, two publisher's notices tipped in at the front, loosely held in green morocco backed near-contemporary boards, engraved title label with a letterpress label underneath with the imprint of Cooke in association with Rodwell and Martin, small ticket of the bookbinders Leighton & Son of Cold Bath Square, bookplate of the Society of Writers to Her Majesty's Signet to the inner front cover of both wrappers and boards, held in a later green cloth clamshell box, this a little worn. Map of East Sussex after Thomas Allason plus 5 plates - Battle Abbey, Brightling Observatory, Vale of Ashburnham, Pevensey Bay and the Vale of Heathfield. Slight wear to the edges of the boards, some marginal foxing to the plates, an attractive copy of a scarce work. John Fuller (1757-1834) was one of Turner's most important patrons, acquiring 13 of his watercolours and 2 oil paintings. It has been suggested that the two had been introduced by Turner's other great patron, Lord Egremont, in 1809, with Turner making numerous visits to Fuller's residence (at the time named Rose Hill, since renamed Brightling Park) in the succeeding decade. It was intended that 14 of the paintings Fuller purchased would be engraved in this series, however only the first of three planned parts appeared, without the view of Hastings from the sea which the publishers promised would appear in the never-to-be published second part. Farrant, Sussex Depicted, p. 171 for a description of Turner's painting of Brightling Park. Hutchinson, Fuller: The Life and Times of John Fuller of Brightling..., pp. 13-14. Item #34170
